The metallic circuit or two-wire circuit was developed and patented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1881. So copper cable has had close to 150 years of development and along with that, the manufacturing process of it. Yet like everything else it never stops developing and improving.

Being such a specific and competitive industry it is important to keep up to date with developments. Alvern Cables have always been focused on producing a cost effective, high quality product, and the newest technological developments have a huge impact on us and our industry.

One of the methods we employ is accurate use of Laser Diameter controllers. This is essential in any cable plant for the following reasons:

  1. It ensures that the OD (Outside Diameter) of the product is consistent and within the required specifications. This helps the manufacturer to ensure that there is no over sizing leading to material losses and affecting costs and also no under sizing leading to poor quality and failing products spiking scrap costs.
  2. It also ensures the customer can use the correct size glands and get a perfect sealed unit every time. This is especially important where automated stripping of the product is required like in the manufacture of extension leads.
  3. Along with OD, core centring is vital and for this we use X-Ray equipment as this tends to vacillate during the production process.

This along with other new technologies employed throughout our business ensures that Alvern Cables will always deliver a cost effective, high quality product into the market. This is our guarantee and has assisted us in our steady and consistent growth to be one of South Africa’s leading Cable Manufacturers.
